The Traffic Situation service visualises data provided by Fintraffic, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) on a map. The service presents information that these organisations currently collect on road, maritime and rail transport. The information presented comes from road weather and traffic measurement systems, traffic control systems and other information systems.
In the service, you can move between different data type categories and view different data on the map simultaneously. The service contains information on disruptions and driving conditions affecting road traffic and their forecast, traffic flow and congestion, weight restrictions caused by road conditions, open and closed ice roads and pictures from cameras on the road. Station-specific timetable and punctuality data are presented for rail transport. Information on maritime traffic includes warnings published by Traficom for those travelling on waters, and information about vessels in port and the next vessels arriving at all Finnish ports,
Please note: The visibility of observation data displayed in the Traffic Situation service are affected by factors related to weather and equipment, and the stability of operation of several electronic systems. For this reason, the information is not always accurate or may be missing. Observation data displayed are based on information available at the time of production of the site. Users should be aware that actual circumstances on the road network may differ from the information on this website.
Frequently asked questions about the Traffic Situation service.
Content of the service
Disruptions and road work
Traffic incident announcements are traffic announcements that describe events that are negatively affecting traffic on the road network. Traffic incident notices are prepared at Fintraffic’s road traffic centres, and they are sent for accidents and other traffic disruptions (weather conditions, obstacle, object or animal on the road, ferry traffic, traffic restrictions, traffic situation, visibility and environmental conditions, operation of roadside equipment, a vehicle or transport that is causing a dangerous situation on the road, and public and other events). Traffic incident announcements contain information on the estimated duration of the incident, its impacts and the traffic arrangements caused by them.
Preliminary announcements are the announcements first drawn up on an accident, and are based on information provided automatically by the Emergency Response Centre on the type and location of the accident. Details will be added to the content of the preliminary announcement once information confirmed by the authorities is available from the incident location. Preliminary announcements are automatically removed from the map 30 minutes after the message has been sent.
A traffic announcement is a notice issued on traffic incidents based on confirmed information received from Fintraffic's road traffic centres or other authorities. Traffic announcements aim to describe the impacts of the incident on traffic and an estimate of the duration of the disruption.
The "Situation over" announcement indicates the end of the effects of the previous incident and the return of traffic to normal.
Road works announcements provide information on road works that disrupt traffic and seriously disrupt traffic, their duration and possible special arrangements. Roadworks are shown on the map with a different symbol than other incidents.
The weight limits are the current weight restrictions caused by road conditions. The location of the weight limit, the restricted road section and the actual weight limit are given for weight limits.
Driving conditions
The Road Conditions view describes the current road conditions by road section and the forecasts of their development. Information on current driving conditions, weather conditions, wind speed and direction, air and road surface temperature and forecasts of their development are available for each road section.
The data is based on information collected from Fintraffic road traffic control's road weather stations and forecasts based on Vaisala weather models.
Road condition cameras
Road condition cameras are automatic cameras located along the main roads that regularly take still photos of the road in one or more directions. The photos indicate the weather conditions (wetness of the road surface, snowfall or rain, brash slush or grooves on the road) or the flow of traffic (formation of lines) both at the time the photograph was taken and compared to previous photographs from the same location.
Each road conditions camera also has its own page, which can be accessed from the map, and to which you can also link directly, for example, to your bookmarks. Information on the wind intensity and air and road surface temperature from the nearest road weather station has been added to each camera.
Road maintenance data and Winter maintenance
Road maintenance data and Winter maintenance views show the latest maintenance measures carried out on the road. These include snow and slush removal, road levelling and anti-skid measures. The service shows the maintenance performed within the last 24 hours.
The information in the service is based on the location and maintenance work information sent by maintenance contractors to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. The vehicle's route shown on the map in the Traffic Situation service does not always fully follow the road alignment, as the route is formed according to the GPS locations sent by the vehicle.
Congestion
The Congestion view shows the current traffic situation at individual measuring points (LAMs) throughout the country.
Individual measurement points are induction loops embedded in the road that are able to identify vehicles travelling over the road and determine such things as the speed and type of the vehicle. In order to determine the traffic situation, the number and average speed of cars exceeding this point over a period of 5 minutes is calculated from the data of these measuring points and compared with the calculated values of smooth traffic.
Ice roads
Traffic announcements for ice roads provide information on open and closed ice roads.
Train traffic
The station-specific timetable and punctuality data for passenger trains show each station's current trains both coming and past with scheduled arrival and departure times and the forecasted or actual corresponding times.
The information is obtained from the Fintraffic LIIKE information system on train traffic, which manages rail capacity on our railways. The systems contains e.g. train timetable data and it can also be used to monitor their real-time implementation.
The information obtained from the LIIKE system may differ slightly from the passenger information presented at stations.
Maritime traffic
Information on maritime traffic includes navigational warnings published by Turku Radio and information about vessels in port and the next vessels arriving at all Finnish ports, In addition to the name of the vessel and its time of arrival and departure, those interested in ship traffic may also view a vessel's home country as well as their previous and next port of call. The source for port information is the Portnet port traffic information system maintained by Traficom.

Traffic announcements on X (formerly Twitter)
Fintraffic's road traffic control relays 1-200-digit roads to X as well as accidents and other disruptions in the Helsinki region.
This social media channel, which is implemented as a pilot, includes some of the situational information found in the Traffic Situation service. The announcements for roads 1-200 can be found on X under the name @liikennetilanne and the announcements for the Helsinki region under the name @liikennePKS .
For the time being, the channels operate one-way and possible feedback is welcomed.
