The safety and traffic management technology in the road tunnel leading to Vuosaari Harbour in Helsinki is reaching the end of its life cycle and is scheduled to be renewed. According to the plans, construction work in the tunnel will begin in the spring/summer of 2025, at which point the tunnel will be closed to traffic for approximately one year. The main detour will be the current substitute route for the tunnel: Itäväylä–Kallvikintie–Niinisaarentie–Vuosaari Harbour. The implementation of the project has been prepared in collaboration with the ELY Centre, the City of Helsinki, and the Port of Helsinki.
Goal: smooth and safe flow of harbour traffic
- The extensive renovation will include the upgrading of all technical systems in the tunnel. This includes fire alarms, smoke extraction, ventilation and alarm systems, lighting, cameras and traffic management systems.
- In addition, the tunnel structures will be repaired and the drainage and fire-extinguishing water systems under the tunnel will be replaced.
The project also includes improving the tunnel's alternative route. This route will serve as a primary detour during the tunnel repairs. The detour runs through Itäväylä, Kallvikintie and Niinisaarentie to Vuosaari harbour.
