Frequently asked questions about the Traffic Situation service
We work to constantly develop the Traffic Situation service. Feedback we receive from users will be taken into account in the service's development. Feedback and questions can be sent at https://www.fintraffic.fi/fi/feedback.
The Traffic Situation service works best with the latest versions of the most common browsers. We recommend mobile users download the Fintraffic Mobiili app for the best user experience.
FAQs
The camera does not open/display in the service, what is the reason for this?
The picture of an individual road condition camera may be missing temporarily due to a malfunction, communications failure or maintenance work. Cameras that have been permanently removed or replaced may remain on the map view for some time before the change is updated in the service.
Why is the map template outdated at places and missing new road sections?
Map templates are ready map templates produced and updated by a third party. Fintraffic cannot directly influence the content or updating of the background maps. Outdated or inaccurate information in the base map should be reported to the map provider.
Why is traffic flow displayed in red in the middle of the night? How can there be congestion without any traffic?
The traffic flow category is determined by comparing the median speed of cars that have passed the measuring point within the past 5 minutes to the calculated free-flowing traffic speed. As a result, the traffic flow category may be based on the speed of just one car and is therefore not indicative of actual traffic conditions.
Why is the route of a road maintenance vehicle incorrect in the service (e.g. shows that it has passed via streets through which it has not actually passed)?
The information on the movements of maintenance vehicles presented in the Traffic Situation service is based on the GPS locations sent by the vehicles. The transmission frequency of the locations varies, and the route on the map does not always follow the road network precisely.
How are the colours indicating the delay at railway stations determined?
The service uses minute-specific thresholds to categorise delays in service. These thresholds are also used in statistics on the punctuality of railway traffic. Commuter trains are considered to be slightly delayed if they arrive 3-10 minutes behind schedule, and severely delayed if 11 minutes behind schedule or later. Correspondingly, long-distance trains are considered to be slightly delayed when late by 6-15 minutes, and severely delayed if 16 minutes behind schedule or later.
Railway stations on the service map view are displayed in yellow if even one of the trains currently arriving or departing from the station is slightly delayed. A red signal indicating a serious delay is used if even one of the station's trains is very late.
Why is a vessel listed as in port even though it has already departed or not yet arrived?
Vessel lists are based on notifications made by shipping companies, ports and/or authorities to the Portnet information system. From some ports, information is transmitted to Portnet directly from the port’s own systems, but in many cases, the vessel is responsible for reporting its information to Portnet manually. For this reason, reporting may sometimes be delayed.
The service presumes vessels to have entered port 30 minutes after the expected time of arrival, even if the actual time of arrival has not yet been reported. The service also presumes vessels to have departed three hours after their expected time of departure. A vessel whose departure is reported on time will be deleted from the list approximately half an hour after the actual departure time.
How far into the future are arriving ships listed?
The service displays vessels arriving during the next two days, but no more than the first ten vessels.
