Operations are based on an overall picture of transport
Safe and smooth road transport requires continuous monitoring of traffic and management of the overall picture of transport that adapts to the prevailing traffic and road conditions. This work is carried out at Fintraffic’s Road Traffic Centre.
The Road Traffic Centre receives continuous real-time situational information from, for example, thousands of roadside devices and systems that collect traffic and road condition information from all around Finland, different authorities and motorists calling the Road User Line.
Fintraffic’s Road Traffic Centre operates urban and road tunnel control systems, changing speed limit signs on roads, information and alternative route signs, traffic lights, etc. Motorists can see this in how the centre respond rapidly to different hazard situations and disruptions. It means, for example, warning motorists of congestion, slippery road surfaces or traffic accidents by means of changing displays on motorways. Even the speed limits are controlled taking account of road conditions and traffic volumes to ensure that traffic can run as safely as possible and that traffic flows smoothly even during peak hours.
Nerve centre of communication
Communicating about exceptional situations and disruptions is one of the basic tasks of Fintraffic’s Road Traffic Centre. It can be called the nerve centre of road traffic communications.
At an annual level, the Road Traffic Centre make nearly 14,000 traffic announcements on different exceptional situations. As motorist, you may hear our traffic announcements on the radio or receive information directly to your vehicle’s navigator.
In addition to different observation devices and information systems, we also receive information on various disruptions by telephone. In acute traffic hazard situations, motorists can call us on the Road User Line. If the situation does not pose an immediate risk, in many cases, the most convenient way of submitting a notification on such things as ploughing, levelling the road surface, road repairs or anti-skid measures is to use the Feedback Channel. From the Feedback Channel, your notification is also transferred directly to road maintenance.
