Business Finland & Fintraffic: The potential of the data economy should be put to use in the hunt for growth

Fintraffic studied the value of the traffic data economy with consultancy firm FLOU in December 2024. According to the study, the value of the traffic data economy in Finland has increased to EUR 500 million, more than EUR 50 million of which is produced by Fintraffic alone (+35% since 2022).

“In these uncertain times, Fintraffic's data produces added value in extremely topical areas, such as improving safety and enhancing logistics. In addition, data creates value for both individuals and society as a whole through shorter travel times, improved accessibility of public transport, improved efficiency in the use of transport routes and development of the entire transport system,” explains Janne Lautanala, Chief Ecosystem and Technology Officer at Fintraffic.

Business Finland and Fintraffic jointly emphasise putting the data economy to use in the hunt for growth.

“Business Finland accelerates the renewal, innovation and internationalisation of companies in a variety of ways. The Data Economy program is a key tool in this respect and works in close cooperation with Fintraffic. Together, we encourage companies to explore opportunities for more extensive utilisation and sharing of data in business activities, all the way to international markets. Our goal is to bring about a change in which companies develop completely new products and services based on data to support the growth of Finnish exports and thus increase the well-being of all of us,” explains Kari Klossner, Head of the Data Economy program at Business Finland.

Together with Business Finland, Fintraffic sees clear growth potential in the utilisation of the data economy. A recent impact study shows that the traffic sector is setting a good example in its utilisation.

“In order for the data economy to work, it requires less friction between actors, solving challenges in both competence and technology, increasing cooperation and encounters between actors, and finding the right business cases. These are the things we promote in the Traffic Data Ecosystem coordinated by Fintraffic. More than 200 organisations are already involved in the Ecosystem, which has been running for more than four years,” says Lautanala.

Further information on the impact study conducted by consultancy firm FLOU:

  • Conducted for the first time in 2023, the study examined 2022. An update to the study was made in December 2024.

  • In 2024, the value of the transport data economy in Finland was already approximately EUR 500 million (EUR 400 million /2022), with the combined share of Fintraffic’s direct and indirect impacts accounting for approximately EUR 54 million (EUR 40 million / 2022) of this amount. The direct benefits of the transport data economy produced by Fintraffic were estimated to be EUR 16 million, with an increase of as much as 60% since the study was conducted two years ago.

  • Fintraffic’s share of the transport data economy increased from 4% to 6% between 2022 and 2024. This growth is driven by increased data sharing and the popularity of the Fintraffic App.

Further information on Fintraffic’s services and the Traffic Data Ecosystem:

  • Utilisation of Fintraffic traffic data increased by about 30% in 2024.

  • In total, the use of Fintraffic’s digital services almost tripled last year.

  • Fintraffic Mobile played a significant role in increasing impact – the application was used 1.2 million times in the fourth quarter of 2024 and has more than 60,000 users.

  • In addition to traffic mode-specific traffic management services, Fintraffic impacts society by promoting the interoperability of traffic modes and the operation of the transport system as a whole in many ways. In recent years, Fintraffic’s role in combining all modes of traffic has brought together traffic sector actors to build the Traffic Data Ecosystem. At the end of 2024, the Ecosystem had 226 members.

  • The aim of the Traffic Data Ecosystem is to make better use of traffic data, thus promoting the development of services in the sector. The Ecosystem provides competitive and scalable transport and mobility services for both Finnish and international markets – solutions that will enable safe, low-emission and user-oriented travel and transport chains that combine different modes of traffic.

  • Launched last year, an export cluster coordinated by Fintraffic produced leads worth approximately EUR 15 million on the international market during its first year of operation.
