When things happen on the road and the rails, this app immediately notifies you – Fintraffic Mobile helps you prepare

The new Fintraffic Mobile application brings real-time traffic data from Finnish roads and rail traffic to road users and rail passengers. The application utilises real-time data obtained directly from Fintraffic’s traffic centres. Location-based push notifications inform the user immediately when something abnormal happens nearby on the roads or on a preferred rail route.

Fintraffic Mobile also offers road users images from all Finnish road weather cameras and details of road works, congestion points, driving conditions and weather information, road weather warnings, electric car charging stations and gas car refuelling stations. The convenient map view allows you to view the information that interests you most. For rail traffic, you can view real-time timetable and departure platform information and disruption alerts for all Finnish railway stations.

The application utilises real-time data from Fintraffic’s Digitraffic service, which imports data from sources such as Fintraffic’s traffic centres.

Notifications of road traffic disruption alerts are based on GPS positioning, so the service also works when on the road. Train users, meanwhile, can select which routes and train services they wish to receive notifications for. A similar route search feature is also planned for road traffic.

Coming up: impact of traffic incidents

Fintraffic wants to help users to plan as smooth a journey as possible.

"We will develop the application to be more communicational. For example, users could be reminded in the evening of the slippery driving conditions forecast for the following morning, allowing them to select the best transport option for avoiding unnecessary complications. Similarly, the traffic impacts of known incidents could be communicated to users well in advance,” explains Fintraffic’s Head of Digital Antti Haarala

Crowdsourced feedback on poor road conditions and disruptions

The Traffic Customer Service’s Feedback Channel service has been integrated into the app, meaning that users can send feedback directly through the application. The user can also easily follow the progress of their feedback within the app.

One of the goals of Fintraffic Mobile is to activate users to share via the app their own feedback and observations on issues such as traffic disruptions or poor road surfaces.

"You can give feedback on things such as potholes, damaged traffic signs or blank announcement screens on station platforms. The Traffic Customer Service processes feedback and forwards the information to others, including contractors that carry out maintenance work. As safety is the top priority for Fintraffic, we would also like to remind users, however, that submitting observations – just like using the app in other ways – should be done when your vehicle is stopped, not when you are driving,” Haarala adds.
