Railway Traffic Control and Management
Traffic controlling in the state-owned rail network is Fintraffic Railway Ltd's main function and largest business unit.
Traffic control is the responsibility of traffic controllers who have undergone training specified by Traficom and obtained a traffic controller’s qualification. In addition to the control of rail traffic, the traffic controllers’ tasks include securing access paths, issuing permits for shunting and securing track work and issuing permits for them. The traffic controllers are also responsible for managing traffic anomalies and exceptions together with various interest groups, such as, the rescue authority and other operators.
Traffic control is centralised into control service centres, which are located in seven localities: Helsinki, Tampere, Oulu and Kouvola. In addition to these larger control service centres, traffic is controlled also at separate points other localities.
Traffic is controlled around the clock, every day of the year.
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is responsible for the management, development and maintenance of the Finnish rail Network.
Duties of railway traffic control:
- Gives permission to departure from station
- Secures the rail lines in use
- Gives permission to shunting/switching
- Gives permission to maintenance work and secures the areas under construction
- Manages accident / disturbance situations
